I got Sheik Yerbouti by Frank Zappa a few days ago, and it's been on loop since. One thing I love about Zappa is the character in the lyrics. There's some really funny yet intelligent humor in it. And musically, it's absolutely brilliant.

The first time I was exposed to Zappa was when we watched Baby Snakes in animation class. Part of what we watched was this clip plays Baby Snakes in the background (on Sheik Yerbouti)

There's lots of instruments you just don't hear clearly on youtube, notably the badass piano at the end, so it's hardly doing the song justice. However, if you want to see some absolutely crazy animation, you'll enjoy this clip. The animator's name is Bruce Bickford. I'd recommend looking up more of his stuff on youtube. He's pretty amazing.

Anyway, this is the second album I've gotten by Frank Zappa. The other one I have is Joe's Garage. I definitely need moar. If any Zappa fans read this and have recommendations, I'll hear them.

Today was a big day.

The biggest thing would probably the discovery that the administrators of FurAffinity, in fact, do have sand in their vaginas. Pool's closed, folks, the site's been hacked. Not that I needed to post anything, but I wanted to post a journal about things nobody cared about. Guess that's what this place is for then. Glad I came.

Amongst the chaos, I discovered this http://community.livejournal.com/wtf_fa/ and this http://community.livejournal.com/deviantartsnark.  I have found a reason to be on Livejournal.

I also got Apollo 18 by They Might Be Giants (OMG I LOVE TEH2 JOHNS I MARIED THEM 8934X HOLY SHIT!!!1) from my brother today. I already a lot of the music from their greatest hits album, but theres still some nice treats here. If you don't listen to They Might Be Giants, then you should die a horrible death. :p

Note: At least at the beginning, I"ll probably be copying my journals from elsewhere here.  Anyway...

I admit, I am a big Beach Boys fan. I've been listening to some of the bootlegs of Smile, which was their legendary unreleased album (recorded in 1966-67). Brian Wilson rerecorded it in 2004 and did a good job of it, but there's something to be said about the originals.

What's crazy is this album is very different from what the Beach Boys were known for. I'll give you some highlights.

Heroes and Villains- I believe this was eventually released on Smiley Smile, which was the album that replaced Smile. I don't have it, so I don't know how different it sounded. Anyway, I (maybe somewhat pretentiously) think of this one as sorta like Brian Wilson's playground.

Do You Like Worms? (Roll Plymouth Rock)- I love this song. It starts out sounding like a Beach Boys song, but somethings not quite right. Suddenly it just gets really dark. The way voices are used as instruments in this is really great. I also really like the way this turned out in the 2004 rerecording.

Surf's Up- One of the most beautiful pop songs I've ever heard in my life. This was released on a later album (Surf's Up), but it was originally supposed to be on Smile

Fire (Mrs. Oleary's Cow)- Brian Wilson was basically on acid the whole time he did this album, and this track kinda proves it. Still, it's amazing. Fire is exactly what comes to mind when you hear it.

Good Vibrations- the version you hear today wasn't the original. Not sure if this version was going to be the one on Smile or not, but here it is.

I'd recommend picking up the rerelease. Sure, the only original Beach Boy is Brian Wilson, and his voice can't do what it once could due to drug abuse, but he arguably was The Beach Boys. I'd also recommend reading about the band. Their history is very tragic, but interesting-especially considering their happy go lucky public image.I admit, I am a big Beach Boys fan. You don't know me, but I know you. I lurk amongst the darkest shadows of the globe, hunting for the flesh of those unworthy.
